Schizophrenia, The Split of The Mind
Schizophrenia is a mental
disorder which is characterized by the failure to distinguish what is real and
what is not. People with schizophrenia are also often believed to have different
personality characterized by confusion, false belief, and the hearing of voices
that others can’t hear, usually the voice of religious or prominent figure. People
with schizophrenia also have problems with anxiety, social engagement, and ability
to express their emotion. The onset of schizophrenia is usually found in the
late teen period.
The factors of schizophrenia are
often presented in a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Genetic factor
is based on the heritability of schizophrenia itself. It means that someone
whose first degree relatives have schizophrenia is prone to inherit the
disorder in his/her later life. Environmental factor ranges from the living environment,
the use of certain substance (such as
cannabis), and developmental factor such as malnutrition during pregnancy.
Schizophrenia is often related to
neurological condition. People with schizophrenia have a subtle difference in
terms of brain chemistry during the psychotic state. Therefore, medication is
the only effective way for people with schizophrenia. The major medication for
schizophrenia is usually called the antipsychotic, including first generation
drug such as chlorpromazine (also known as thorazine), haloperidol (also known
as Haldol) and trilafon along with some newer atypical antipschotics.
All these drugs have typical side
effects such as spasm, weight gain, change in metabolism, dry mouth, and motion
difficulties. The majority of people with this disorder may harm themselves or
others. Schizophrenia also increases the inclination to commit suicide or
violence. However, earlier and continuous treatment is proven to lead to better
result.
